Adventures of the Dog – Workshop

An introduction to Ukrainian cinema through the cartoon “Once upon a time there was a dog…”. Guests get the chance to see the film which will be showing during the workshop and hear the music. Inspired by the cartoon figures guests can draw and/or cut out silhouettes from the character of the animation and create their own story and add their own figures.

The workshop takes place in Swedish, Icelandic, Ukrainian and English.

“Once upon a time there was a dog” is a 1983 animated film directed by Eduard Nazarov, based on the Ukrainian folk tale “Sirko”.

In the early 1980s, the director of “Soyuzmultfilm” several times visited his friends in Oleshky (Kherson region) for a summer vacation, and it was in this beautiful city that he was inspired by beautiful white houses, night festivities, songs and feasts. Even as a child, Eduard Nazarov loved the Ukrainian fairy tale about the dog Sirko, which also played a significant role in the creation of the cartoon.

The director worked on the script for about a year – he collected materials in museums in Kyiv and Lviv, researched the life and interior in the village of Pyrohiv, recorded songs in Poltava region. Folk songs sound in the cartoon: “My father was mowing, I was mowing”, “Oh there on the mountain”, “Oh to the forest path” and “Oh the hoop burst”.

“Once upon a time there was a dog” won the first prize at the V International Fairy Tale Film Festival, Odense, Denmark, 1983 and the special jury prize of Annecy, France, 1983.

«Жив-був пес» — мультиплікаційний фільм 1983 режисера Едуарда Назарова, створений за мотивами української народної казки «Сірко»

На початку 1980-х режисер “Союзмультфільму” кілька разів приїздив до друзів в Олешки (Херсонщина) у літню відпустку і саме у цьому прекрасному місті він надихнувся красивими білими будинками, нічними гулляннями, піснями та застіллями. Ще в дитинстві Едуард Назаров полюбляв українську казку про собаку Сірка, яка теж відіграла чималу роль у створенні мульфільму.

Режисер працював над сценарієм мультфільму близько року – він збирав матеріали у музеях Києва та Львова, вивчав побут та інтер’єр у селищі Пирогів, записував пісні на Полтавщині.

У мультфільмі звучать народні пісні: “Та косив батько, косив я”, “Ой там на горі”, “Ой до бору стежечка” та “Ой лопнув обруч”.

“Жив був пес” отримав I місце на V Міжнародному кінофестивалі казкових фільмів, Odense, Denmark, 1983 та спеціальний приз журі Annecy, France, 1983.
