Contingency Sample
On the occasion of the panel discussions Narrative Sovereignty and the screening of Orsugiak (The White Gold of Greenland) at the Nordic House, a selection of works from Contingency Sample, an exhibition presented at Verksmiðjan in Hjalteyri in the summer of 2026, will also be on view.
The exhibition connects Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Iceland, and Jamaica through cryolite, energy, and bauxite – three fundamental conditions of aluminium production. Its title refers to the Apollo 11 astronauts, who trained in Iceland before their journey to the Moon and were instructed to collect a sample immediately upon landing, in case something went wrong.
In Contingency Sample, aluminium itself becomes such a sample, gathered in the face of an uncertain future on Earth. The exhibition thus asks, with T. J. Demos: Who has the right to produce the future?
