Winter Workshop: Mikki Mouse and art in the trees

Children aged 8-12 are invited to a two-day creative course for curious kids at The Nordic House during the primary school winter break. In the course we will explore The exhibition OPEN HOUSE and the sculptures that are now in the outdoor area of The Nordic House by the artist Helgi Valdimarsson, which show Mickey Mouse and Gunnar á Hlíðarenda, among others. The teacher of this course is Arnar Ásgeirson, artist and curator of OPEN HOUSE. Arnar uses creative ways to communicate the exhibition and the children will have opportunity to practice using the mediums that can be seen in the exhibition. We will experiment with in on the first day and on the second day we will use clay. The workshop takes place in the outdoor area of The Nordic House, the exhibition space Hvelfing, Elissa auditorium and in the children’s library – so the kids will have the opportunity to get to know the building and its surroundings well.
Arnar Ásgeirsson (b. 1982) completed a BA degree in arts from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and graduated with an MA degree from the Sandberg Institute in the Netherlands. Arnar works in diverse media such as videos, drawings, installations and sculptures. In his work, he highlights everyday and misunderstood cultural references, reconstructs them and gives them a new meaning. With familiar imagery, Arnar ponders the idea of the original and imitation and the difference between originality and imitation. Arnar is one of the founders of the artist-run space Open.
Arnar is a part-time teacher at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and Reykjavík School Art and has hosted many art workshops.

Access to Hvelfing is good. An elevator goes down from the main floor, but you can also go down stairs from outside of the building. Accessible restrooms are on the main floor and all restrooms are gender neutral. The children’s library is wheelchair accessible from Hvelfing exhibition space. Library staff can provide good guidance. A ramp leads from the parking lot to the entrance of the Nordic House and there is an automatic button by the door. This event takes place in Icelandic and English.
