Winter Trees – What Happens to Trees during Winter?

13:00 - 15:00
Children's Library
Free entry

The whole family is welcome to a collage workshop inspired by winter trees!

Trees go dormant or ‘slow down’ for the winter as they sense a shift in levels of daylight. This helps them to become more tolerant of cold temperatures. Most trees lose their leaves but trees with needles-evergreen trees or Christmas trees, keep their needles and can actually photosynthesize during the winter.

In this collage workshop guests are encouraged to use available material to make a unique winter tree. It is possible for those who need a holiday card to put their collage tree on a folded paper to create a one of a kind card for a loved one. Materials and instructions in different languages will be available and teachers are on site to assist. The workshop takes place in Icelandic, French and English. It is for free, and everyone is welcome!

The workshop takes place in the Children´s library where the exhibition “The Tree” takes place. It explores the concept of trees in children’s books, featuring illustrations from Nordic picture books. It promotes image reading -beyond languages and encourages guests to read books from the images. The books are part of The Bookworm, a Nordic database of educational materials related to books nominated for The Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize. The database is free and accessible to everyone in all Nordic languages at bokslukaren.org.

Teacher of the workshop is Estelle Pollaert, a French multidisciplinary artist based in Reykjavik, Iceland. Formerly trained as a product designer/glass blower in France and in Finland she now focuses on illustration and building of papier mâché sculptures. Her art is playful, colorful and makes us smile every day we encounter them. Estelle has experience teaching to Children’s in English, French and Icelandic.
