To translate and to be translated

Ever since the novel Sextíu kíló af sólskini by Hallgrímur Helgason was published in Norway, it has been on top of the bestseller lists.

The herring fishing industry was certainly a major industry in both Norway and Iceland, but a literary success of this kind tells us that the Norwegian translator, Maren Barlien Guntvedt, has managed the daunting task of translating Helgason’s storytelling passion, lush cast of characters and the fine line between humour and despair.

In collaboration with the Norwegian Embassy in Iceland, The Nordic House invites you to a literary herring feast on Tuesday 19th of May at 17 o’clock.

Writer Hallgrímur Helgason and translator Maren Barlien Guntvedt are going to discuss the process of translation. How did the translator tackle a big project like this? Have the two of them co-operated on the way? How does it feel to be translated into another language? The conversation will be moderated by Silje Beite Løken from The Nordic House.

The Embassy will offer beer and herring, and everything is set for cozy harbour vibes in Vatnsmýrin.

Entrance is free. The Ambassador´s speech and the conversation will be in Norwegian.
