Baltic Children's Culture Festival
Baltic Children’s Culture festival will be held in the Nordic house April 20 to June 14.
The Nordic house celebrates children’s culture by presenting Baltic culture in a creative way in collaboration with people with background from the Baltic countries. During the first week of the festival, school groups will be invited to a collage workshop inspired by historical buildings from Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Lithuanian artist Jurgita Motiejunaite tells children about the history of the buildings and assists them in making their own collages. Artworks resulting from the scrap workshop will be hung on the wall in the entrance of the Nordic house creating an exhibition that will last until the end of the festival, the 14th of June.
Various events will be held during the Baltic children’s culture festival. To name some are an instrument workshop where participants get to learn about Trejdeksnis, a Lithuanian percussion instrument and a Baltic story- and cartoon workshop working around a Lithuanian folk tale about a grass snake.
The library of the Nordic house furthermore offers story times in Lithuanian and Latvian and books in those languages will be available in collaboration with Modurmal – organisation on bilingualism. Books from the Lithuanian publishing house Big and Small will be among the selected children books.
The festival has a hybrid form meaning that the workshops are either open to the public or booked in advance by schoolgroups. Upcoming open events appear below as the festival progresses. Booking and information is given by Hrafnhildur, mediator of arts and culture: hrafnhildur@nordichouse.is.

Šiaurės šalių kultūros namai kviečia džiaugtis vaikų kultūra kūrybiškai pristatydami Baltijos šalių kultūrą ir bendradarbiaudami su iš tų šalių kilusiais Islandijos gyventojais. Pirmąją festivalio savaitę mokinių grupės kviečiamos į kūrybines koliažo dirbtuves, įkvėptas istorinių Vilniaus, Lietuvos sostinės, pastatų. Lietuvė menininkė Jurgita Motiejūnaitė pasakoja vaikams apie pastatų istoriją ir padeda jiems sukurti savo koliažus. Meniniai darbai sukurti kūrybinių dirbtuvių metu bus pakabinti parodoje erdvėse prie Šiaurės šalių kultūros namų įėjimo. Paroda tęsis iki festivalio pabaigos birželio 14 d.
Baltijos šalių vaikų kultūros festivalio metu vyks įvairūs renginiai, tokie kaip kūrybinės instrumentų dirbtuvės, kuriose dalyviai susipažins su lietuvišku perkusijos instrumentu džinguliu (treidekšniu) ir tradicine lietuvių pasaka apie žaltį.
Šiaurės šalių kultūros namų biblioteka siūlo daugiau renginių, skirtų istorijoms lietuvių ir latvių kalbomis, o taip pat ir knygų šiomis kalbomis, kurios prieinamos bendradarbiaujant su „Modurnal“ – su dvikalbyste dirbančia organizacija. Knygos iš lietuviškos leidyklos „Didelis ir mažas“ yra tarp atrinktų knygų vaikams.
Festivalis vyksta mišria forma, tai yra, kūrybinės dirbtuvės atviros plačiajai publikai arba į jas mokinių grupėms reikia registruotis iš anksto. Summer Chanting with the Latvian School in Reykjavik
May 15th. A closed event due to covid regulations. Video from the event and the craft will be shared on the Nordic house website during the festival.
The students of the Latvian School in Reykjavik will chant in summer with Latvian songs, riddles and games. They play traditional circle games such as “The Sun and the Moon” and “Who is in the garden?” Summer birds will be called with traditional Latvian instruments – ‘svilpavnieks’ and ‘kokle’. Students will also learn to make paper birds and weave their nest.
The Dainas (Latvian Folk songs) are little quatrains of ancient Latvian wisdom captured in song. Created over a thousand years ago, Dainas were part of celebrations, daily work, reflections on life preserved in oral form. Latvian folk songs and chant intertwine all the festivities of the year.

Vasaras ieskandināšana ar Reikjavīkas Latviešu skolu.
Reikjavīkas Latviešu skolas audzēkņi vasaru ieskandinās ar latviešu dziesmām, mīklām un rotaļām. Tie spēlēs tradicionālās apļa rotaļas, piemēram, “Saule un Mēness” un “Kas dārzā?”. Vasaras putnus sauks ar tradicionālajiem latviešu instrumentiem – svilpavnieks un kokle. Skolēni iemācīsies izgatavot papīra putnus un vīt tiem ligzdu.
Dainas (latviešu tautasdziesmas) ir mazas latviešu senču gudrības četrrindēs, kas ieaustas dziesmā. Tautasdziesmas ir radušās vairāk kā pirms tūkstots gadiem, un ir svinību, ikdienas darba, dzīves redzējuma atspoguļojums mutvārdu formā. Latviešu tautasdziesmas un dziedājumi savij visus gada svētkus.
Pasākums ir slēgtas formas. Pasākuma video tiks publiskots Ziemeļu mājas (Nordic house) mājas lapā festivāla laikā.

Lithuanian eggs & Icelandic birds
April 24th – A closed event due to Covid regulations
Students from the Lithuanian school in Reykjavik took over the Children’s library at the Nordic house to celebrate the Baltic Children´s Culture Festival. Teachers of the school introduced Icelandic birds and taught the students the Lithuanian names of each bird. The older students got the chance to see the new exhibition Nature in Transition and did a project in connection to it while the younger once learned to craft eggs with Lithuanian methods and patterns.
The White Heart & the Forces of Nature – Drawing Workshop
April 21-22. A closed event due to covid regulations.
Students in the third grade of Melaskóli were invited to a workshop where a Lithuanian legend was connected to Icelandic forces of nature. The well-known Lithuanian legend of the White Heart that casts a spell on the forest was linked to eruptions, earthquakes and other natural forces that Icelanders are familiar with. In the workshop, the students created a joint work of art in a comic book style.
