Wetland in Transition- A Proposed Trail in Andakíll
14:00
You are warmly invited to the opening of Wetland in Transition – A Proposed Trail in Andakíll on Saturday, May 16, at 14:00.
The graduation exhibition offers a sneak peek into wetland restoration and trail-making. The exhibition will be on display in the greenhouse at the Nordic House.
The research takes place in Andakíll, a protected site in Borgarfjorður. Glacial shifts, agricultural use, and ongoing restoration have shaped the area. Wetland in Transition, created in collaboration with participants from the peatland LIFEline, examines accessibility and explores restoration efforts.
Peatland LIFEline is a comprehensive project focused on the recovery of wetlands and biodiversity in Iceland. Seven partners participate in this project: Landbúnaðarháskóla Íslands, Lands og skógar, Náttúrufræðistofnunar, Fuglaverndar, Hafrannsóknastofnunar, Náttúruverndarstofnunar, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
About the project:
The Andakíll Nature Reserve in Hvanneyri, Iceland, is a protected wetland recognized as both a bird sanctuary and a cultural heritage site. Located between the rivers Hvíta and Andakílsá and surrounding the Agricultural University of Iceland, the landscape has evolved through glacial shifts, agricultural use, and ongoing restoration. The Peatland LifeLine project aims to restore parts of the area to its peatland state within the next five years. The graduation project Wetland in Transition proposes an interdisciplinary wetland trail to improve accessibility while engaging with the site’s environmental and cultural narratives. By fostering a direct connection to the landscape, it seeks to reframe the peatland from perceived “wasted land” into a vital natural asset.
Katla J.R. Taylor graduates from the Design & New Environments Master’s program at Listaháskóli Íslands. This exhibition is part of New Environments, a larger graduation exhibition in which fellow students will also present their work at Herma.
