Margarethe Von Trotta is one of the leading film directors on the famous New German Cinema in the 60‘s and 70‘s. She brought youthful and fresh view into cinema as she aimed to focus more current social issues than was known before, framed in an experimental form where artistic view was prior and complex technical implementations were set aside. Throw her carrier, von Trotta has documented the history of women in Germany trough documentaries and played movies. Von Trotta has widened the spectrum of women in films with her inspiring deep and diverse female characters. Von Trotta has received awards for many of her films all around the world.
Von Trotta has been referred to as “leader in feminist filmmaking” which is quite misleading as she does not identify as such. She wants her filmed to be films, not women-films. Von Trotta has said that one of her main goals is to build a new presentation of women in films – and with that she been very successful.
