Buildings and bodies

Architecture is all around us, even if we do not always notice it. The buildings and spaces we inhabit shape our daily lives, how we move, play, work, and interact with one another. 

But how does design and architecture affect us? What kind of homes do we want to live in? Do we need different spaces for different activities, and what makes a good space? 

In Alvar Aalto’s designs, human beings were always the priority, and children were no exception. In his plans and layouts, Aalto took children and their needs into account. His work reminds us that children have a right to a good daily life and an environment that considers their needs. 

The exhibition is based on the book Kurjen Kartta (The Crane’s Map – Adventure in the forest of waives) by Reetta Niemela, featuring beautiful illustrations by Eri Shimatsuka. 

The exhibition also features interactive games, a space for creativity and movement, and a cozy reading corner. A climbing frame for the youngest visitors will also be in place as well as a selection of books focusing on architecture, buildings and bodies. Winter break courses, craft classes “Hyggestund” and Story Hours will also be available for free in connection with the exhibition, and more information can be found on the Nordic House website and social media. 

Exhibitions and events in The Nordic House are always free, and everyone is welcome! 

Access to the children’s library is via stairs from the library or with the elevator from the atrium and through the Hvelfing exhibition space. Our staff will give more information and assist if needed. More information on accessibility in The Nordic House can be found by clicking here.
