Petri Burtsoff writes about the history of the Nordic House in a new piece for Finnish Design Shop’s Design Stories. Built in 1968 to strengthen ties between Iceland and the rest of the Nordic region, the building is described as “one of Alvar Aalto’s most overlooked and politically charged works.”
The piece also highlights the collection of custom Aalto furniture and lighting made exclusively for the building, such as the auditorium chairs and the brass lamps built into the reading tables. Since 2004, the Nordic House has been a protected heritage site, a status that has helped preserve all original details for visitors to see today.
