Hyggestund: Try braiding your own colourful threads!
13:00-15:00
Try braiding your own colourful threads!
The whole family is welcome to a workshop where Sami arts and crafts are put in focus. Braiding, twisting and tassels are important elements, that are used to create both practical and decorative details in Sami culture.
These threads that are created by braiding and twisting become stronger and are used to hold together clothes, belts or shoes, while tassels often decorate the Kofte (the traditional costume of Sami) and other textiles.

The technique, colours and patterns can differentiate from place to place, and every work shows the owners personal style, tradition and local identity. Sami braiding, twisting and tassels is not only beautiful expressions of arts and crafts, but also a living cultural heritage passed through generations.
All ages are welcome, and younger guests can draw and colour in patterns available at the tables during the workshop.
Currently at the Nordic house a Sami artist, Britta Marakatt-Labba is showcasing some of her work in the exhibition RIPPLES – we encourage guests to enjoy the exhibition and see her work before starting their own.
ACCESSIBILITY: The Children’s Library is accessible for wheelchairs through the exhibition hall Hvelfing. Library staff can give guidance. Restrooms are wheelchair accessible and gender neutral.
This event is free and takes place in English and Norwegian.
