Join Us for a Documentary Screening on World Migratory Bird Day: “Puffling” & “The Last Observers”

About the Films:

“Puffling” (2024), directed by Jessica Bishopp, is an award-winning documentary that intertwines themes of adolescence, environmental conservation, and community tradition in the Vestmannaeyjar. The film follows teenagers Birta and Selma as they participate in the annual rescue of ‘pufflings’, which, during their first flight, often become disoriented by the town’s artificial lights, mistaking them for the moon, and consequently land in urban areas instead of reaching the sea.

“The Last Observers” (2025), directed by Maja K Mikkelsen, is an intimate documentary following Karin Persson and Lennart Karlsson, Sweden’s last weather observers and dedicated ornithologists, running the Falsterbo Bird Observatory, one of Europe’s key bird migration stations.

The guests:

  • Erpur Snær Hansen, PhD, and director at South Iceland Nature Research Centre
  • Birta, contributor of the documentary “Puffling”
