RHYTHM KNITTING: knitting with drums
Fashion designer Steinunn Sigurðardóttir invites you to join rhythm knitting with Icelandic musicians Sigtryggur Baldursson (drums) and Steingrímur Guðmundsson (tabla).
Knitting can be both an artistic medium and a manufacturing process, the objective of this knitting performance is to enhance people’s understanding of the cultural and artistic value of knitting. The performance opens the participant´s mind to the possibilities that knitting possesses, whether they know how to knit or not.
The result of the workshop will then get a life on its own and will be installed in Harpa Culture House during the Art Festival.
An animated video shows in a mesmerising way how the knitted cloth is built up loop by loop and the path of the yarn through the loop. It shows in a simple way the engineering structure behind knitting. Video and music will build up the rhythm of the performance.
Participants are asked to bring their own knitting needles and yarn for chunky knitting. The more experienced knitter will rediscover knitting as an artistic medium, while the less experienced knitter will discover that it is easy to learn how to knit and use yarn. Participants are led on a journey through knitting and the result of the performance will be exhibited during Listahátíð.
