Make Your Own Word Leaf!
13:00 - 15:00
The whole family is welcome, on The Day of the Icelandic Language, to a workshop where guests learn how to make a simple origami leaf.
After making the leaf, write your favorite word in your favorite language and then hang it on the ceiling at the children’s library. By this you will add to the exhibition The Tree that is currently showing in the Nordic house children’s library.
“The Tree” is an exhibition that explores the concept of trees in children’s books, featuring illustrations from Nordic picture books. It promotes image reading -beyond languages and encourages guests to read books from the images. The books are part of The Bookworm, a Nordic database of educational materials related to books nominated for The Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize. The database is free and accessible to everyone in all Nordic languages at bokslukaren.org.
Materials and instructions in different languages will be available and teachers are on site to assist. The leaf craft will be available at the children’s library for every visitor to use until May and then all the words will be gathered in a database which will be exhibited.
The workshop takes place in Icelandic, French and English. It is for free and everyone is welcome!
Teacher of the workshop and author of the project in collaboration with the Nordic house Library, is Estelle Pollaert, a French multidisciplinary artist based in Reykjavik, Iceland. Formerly trained as a product designer/glass blower in France and in Finland she now focuses on illustration and building of papier mâché sculptures. Her art is playful, colorful and makes us smile everyday we encounter them. Estelle has experience teaching to Children’s in English, French and Icelandic.
