Soap opera vs Literature: it’s method, not medium that counts
To mark the opening of the Iceland Writers Retreat scriptwriter Megan Herbert will be teaching an open-to-the-public masterclass at Nordic House in Reykjavík.

After years jumping between soap opera plotting rooms, journalistic and literary pursuits, children’s literature, and film production, Megan Herbert firmly believes there are no “soap opera stories” or “literature stories”. Regardless of the target audience, it’s always solid technique that helps a story reach its full potential. This workshop looks at successful tactics and common pitfalls, to elevate your storytelling across any genre or medium.
Megan Herbert has worked for almost two decades as a story liner, script writer, script editor, story producer, and development writer for television shows including long-running Australian drama Neighbours, and BBC dramas EastEnders and Holby City. While living in Iceland, she was Head of Development for Pegasus Pictures. Also a visual artist, she writes and illustrates children’s picture books.
This event is scheduled to coincide with the opening day of the Iceland Writers Retreat and is free and open to the public; however, places are limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. If you’d like to register for this event please send us a facebook message on the Iceland Writers Retreat Facebook page. Clicking on the “going” button is not enough to secure a place. The first 40 participants to register by sending us a message will be added to the guest list.
