The 2022 Nordic Council Children’s Literature Prize

Thirteen Nordic picture books, youth novels, and collections of poetry have been nominated for the 2022 Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize. A playful joy of storytelling, distinctive humour, and melancholy shine through in the nominated works, whilst the many facets of the picture book genre are also widely represented. The winner will be announced on 1 November in Helsinki.

This year’s nominees also deal with more difficult topics of prejudice and making amends, as well as lead us through the horrors of war, terrorist attacks, and onwards towards hope and mutual understanding. Gender roles, identity, and ethnicity are also highlighted through the prism of children’s logic, and new life is breathed into ancient calfskin manuscripts. On top of that, nature, eco-criticism, the confusion of love, and chaos are all depicted at a furious pace.

All the nominated books are available for loan from the Nordic House library.
