The Nordic House welcomes you to the Symposium Visual Literacy. In an increasingly visual world, the ability to interpret and create meaning from images is essential across disciplines.

Join us for 4 short presentations that highlight different aspects of visual literacy.

Gitte Wille the director of Nordisk kulturkontakt presents Bokslukaran, a Nordic project to promote reading of children’s literature in all the Nordic countries. – in English

Ingibjörg Hannesdóttir will present the project SJÓNARAFL which aims in a purposeful way to connect the teaching of visual literacy and art history with the school system and to increase students’ knowledge of the cultural history and cultural heritage.

Bergrún Iris Sævarsdóttir will share their perspective on how images in storytelling convey deeper meanings, often telling us more than words alone. – In Icelandic

Jenny Lucander in conversation about her work with illustrations. – In English

We’ll conclude with a moderated panel discussion focusing on how visual literacy can help us with language and reading. Ingibjörg Hannesdóttir and Bergrún Iris Sævarsdóttir will be joined by John Åge Boman Homleid, Norwegian teacher, and Merete Smith-Sivertsen, associate professor at Háskóla Íslands. The conversation will be moderated by Erling Kjærbo, head librarian at the Nordic House.

We look forward to an engaging symposium with valuable insights and lively dialogue! The presentations are in Icelandic & English, and the conversation and panel discussion will be held in English.
