The Reykjavík International Literature Festival has been operating since 1985. This pleasant festival is a meeting place for readers and authors and a lively forum for discussions about literature, fiction, social issues and much more, because literature touches many people and the topics covered are countless.
Admission to the events is free and they are open to everyone. Conversations are held in English, but readings are in the authors’ native language.

The Absent Author: Program on Boualem Sansal

A programme in honour of the centenary of Thor Vilhjálmsson (1925–2011). The event will focus on the work of the Algerian author Boualem Sansal, who attended the festival in 2023. On 16 November last year, Sansal was arrested due to his political views and has since been sentenced to five years in prison. His books have been banned in Algeria since 2006.
During the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to sign a petition demanding Sansal’s release.
The event will be managed by Sjón.

A programme featuring recipients of the Orðstír Award — the honorary award for translators of Icelandic literature into other languages — alongside Icelandic authors.
Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir and Hallgrímur Helgason will take part in the event.
Light refreshments will be served at the close of the programme, courtesy of the Icelandic Literature Center.
The event will take place in Icelandic.
Accessibility in Elissa auditorium is good, there is a low threshold into the hall. On the same floor is a toilet with good access and changing facilities.
