Today, the jury for the Nordic Council’s Children and Youth Literature Prize is holding its meeting to select the winner for the year 2023. The book that is chosen as the winner will be announced on October 31st!<\/p>\n

Yesterday, the jury visited the Nordic House for a tour of the library and followed by dinner at S\u00f3n\u00f3 restaurant here in the Nordic house. Below, some of the jury members share their thoughts on the process of selecting the winning book for 2023:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great honor to be part of this jury and I\u2019m both thankful and proud to be a part of it.
\nMaybe it\u2019s not really a surprise, but more of a positive fact, that the Swedish and other Nordic children\u2019s and youth literature holds such a high standard that this job is really difficult.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s always a hard task, but regardless of age group we always look for high quality and artistic standard within each unique book we evaluate. – Alle Eriksson, jury member, (SE)<\/p>\n

Jag tycker det k\u00e4nns v\u00e4ldigt intressant, sp\u00e4nnande och hedrande att f\u00e5 vara med i juryn f\u00f6r nordiska r\u00e5dets barn och ungdomslitteraturpris. Det \u00e4r alltid roligt n\u00e4r de olika b\u00f6ckerna b\u00f6rjar droppa in i brevl\u00e5dan. Det h\u00e4r \u00e5ret m\u00e4rkte jag att flera av b\u00f6ckerna handlar om barn som lever med en ensamst\u00e5ende f\u00f6r\u00e4lder. Det g\u00f6r f\u00f6rst\u00e5s att barnet och f\u00f6r\u00e4ldern f\u00e5r ett s\u00e4rskilt band men det kan vara extra tufft om f\u00f6r\u00e4ldern tex tr\u00e4ffar n\u00e5gon, eller om f\u00f6r\u00e4ldern lider av psykisk oh\u00e4lsa. Det \u00e4r flera b\u00f6cker som handlar om sorg och d\u00f6den men \u00e4ven humor och livet. – Annica Andersson, jury member, (\u00c5L)<\/p>\n

N\u00e5r det gjelder arbeidet i den nordiske juryen, er det spennende \u00e5 se p\u00e5 hva de andre nasjonale juryene legger vekt p\u00e5 i sine nominasjoner. Det er et spennende arbeid \u00e5 diskutere seg frem til en vinner, siden jeg ut ifra mitt st\u00e5sted av og til kan ha problemer med \u00e5 se hvorfor enkelte av b\u00f8kene er blitt nominert. \u00c5 v\u00e6re med i juryen er ikke bare for \u00e5 k\u00e5re en vinner. For meg er det ogs\u00e5 en l\u00e6ringsprosess. – Hans Petter Laberg, jury member, (NO)<\/p>\n

This year I was really surprised by the high quality of the books, there are several really beautiful and personal books that would deserve the prize. In many books the child and the experience and feelings of the child are in the center. We can see Nordic children as curious, vivid, deeply feeling persons who are dependent on adults but can also question the adult world. – Kaisa Laaksonen, jury member, (FIN)<\/p>\n

It is, indeed, a challenge to choose between so many different categories: picture books, YA novels, graphic novels, baby books, children\u2019s books, fact, and fiction etc., but that\u2019s part of the job and, in the end, we focus on discussing the nominated works until we all agree on the one that stands out as the most qualitative, intriguing, and challenging. As to common themes this year, we did discuss in the Finnish jury group how many of this year\u2019s nominated works focus on exploring how to deal with difficult feelings (such as envy, grief, or family issues) and how to understand oneself and others better. On the other hand, this is hardly strange since literature as an artform often deals with existential matters. – Maria Lass\u00e9n-Seger, jury member, (FIN)<\/p>\n

It\u00b4s a great honour and responsibility. You are not in the jury to fight for the books from your own country, you really want the best book to win. Every year I am fascinated by the fact that the books can be so different, the sum of them is always very rich. – Mats Berggren, jury member, (SE)<\/p>\n

Noe av utfordringen ved \u00e5 sitte i juryen er at de store landene, som Norge, Sverige, Danmark og Finland, gir ut langt flere b\u00f8ker per \u00e5r enn for eksempel F\u00e6r\u00f8yene, \u00c5land og Gr\u00f8nland. Dette gj\u00f8r at det er betydelig vanskeligere \u00e5 bli nasjonalt nominert hvis man (som forfatter) kommer fra et av de st\u00f8rre landene enn fra de mindre. Og det blir ogs\u00e5 vanskeligere for de mindre landene \u00e5 vinne selve hovedprisen. Prisen fremst\u00e5r derfor ikke (for meg) utelukkende som en ren litteraturpris, men ogs\u00e5 som et viktig symbol p\u00e5 et felles-nordisk samarbeid innenfor litteratur og kultur.\u00a0– Synne Sun L\u00f8es, jury member, (NO)<\/p>\n
