It showcases achievements of designers from the stretch of the Baltic Sea in a broad cultural and visual context. It is a narrative exhibition, a personal narration of the curator, which portrays the visual connection between the designers, their work and the seaside landscape etched into their creative sensitivity through design. The landscape provides the background for the story: dunes, beach and water, vegetation, rocks and submarine life, different times of day and changing seasons. The products and objects crafted by artisans from countries around the Baltic Sea are the cornerstone of the multilayered narration of the project.

The original exhibition presents works of more than 40 designers from eight countries. On the occasion of Roundabout Baltic opening at the Nordic House, examples of contemporary Icelandic design with inspiration from the sea will be added to the exhibition.

The exhibition items are not organized by country of origin. Quite the opposite, by concentrating on formal similarities resulting either from local inspirations, choice of material or the production methods, the exhibition shows analogies in the way creators from the Baltic region think; analogies that are more pronounced than cultural, economic or climatic differences between these countries.

Roundabout Baltic has previously been exhibited at Form/Design Center in Malmö (Sweden) from June 22nd until September 11th 2016, at the Estonian Museum of Applied Arts and Design in Tallinn (Estonia) from October 8th until December 28th 2016, and at the Latvian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Riga (Latvia) from January 25th until February 26th.

Participating designers

Alicja Patanowska (PL), Anki Gneib (SE), Anna Bera (PL), Anne Lorenz (DE), Annike Laigo (EE), Audrone Drungilaite (LT), Chmara Rosinke (PL/AT), Chudy and Grase (LV/DE), COMPANY (FI), Fredrik Paulsen (SE), Grynasz Studio (PL), Hanna Krüger (DE), Iina Vuorivirta (FI), Johanna Tammsalu (EE), Jonas Edvard (DK), Justyna Popławska (PL/DK), Karin Carlander (DK), Kosmos Project (PL), Lisa Hilland (SE), Lith Lith Lundin (SE), Lucas Dahlén (SE), Maija Puoskari (FI), Malafor (PL), Mara Skujeniece (LV), Mare Kelpman (EE), Maria Kristofersson (SE), Marija Puipaitė (LT), Meike Harde (DE), Mikko Laakkonen (FI), Milena Krais (DE), Modus Design (PL), Monica Foster (SE), Olga Bielawska (PL/DE), Pia Wüstenberg (FI/DE), Petra Lilja (SE), Raili Keiv (EE), Rikke Frost (DK), Sampling (LV), Sebastian Jansson (FI), Silvia Knüppel (DE), Silvija Juozelskytė (LT), Studio Fem (DK), Stoft Studio (SE), Toivo Raidmets (EE), Variant Studio (LV), 1+1+1 Nordic Mash-up (SE/FI/IS).

About the co-organizer

The co-organizer of Roundabout Baltic at the Nordic House is the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, which promotes Polish artists and designers worldwide.

The goal of Culture.pl, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s flagship brand, is to promote Poland and Polish culture abroad.
