{"id":65673,"date":"2026-10-06T11:55:34","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T11:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nordichouse.is\/?post_type=event&#038;p=65673"},"modified":"2026-10-06T11:55:34","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T11:55:34","slug":"a-nordic-federation-utopian-dream-or-a-guiding-vision","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/nordichouse.is\/en\/event\/a-nordic-federation-utopian-dream-or-a-guiding-vision\/","title":{"rendered":"A Nordic Federation \u2013 Utopian Dream or a Guiding Vision?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The Nordic Association, in cooperation with the Nordic House, has invited Swedish historian Gunnar Wetterberg to Iceland this autumn to discuss his vision of a Nordic federation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>More than 15 years ago, Gunnar Wetterberg put forward the radical idea that the Nordic countries should unite in a single federal state, which would make them one of the strongest countries in the world. He presented the idea in his book <i>The United Nordic Federation<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>When he first proposed the idea, he believed that, since the people of the Nordic countries were accustomed to living in independent states, it would take several years for them to put the idea into perspective. The dust has now settled, but the idea remains very much alive among a group of people who want to keep the discussion going and explore the possibilities for closer Nordic cooperation\u2014whether under the single flag of a federation or through greater cooperation in various fields.<\/p>\n<p>We are delighted to finally be able to welcome Gunnar to Iceland to discuss his idea and how it has evolved over the years.
