{"id":57015,"date":"2023-10-12T09:41:50","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T09:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nordichouse.is\/?post_type=event&#038;p=57015"},"modified":"2023-11-10T11:11:56","modified_gmt":"2023-11-10T11:11:56","slug":"esseyja-island-fiction-new-publication-eruption-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/nordichouse.is\/en\/event\/esseyja-island-fiction-new-publication-eruption-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Esseyja \/ Island Fiction: Publication Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>You are warmly welcome to the publication release of <i>Esseyja \/ Island Fiction<\/i> in the Nordic House, Reykjav\u00edk, Tuesday November 14th, on the 60th anniversary of the Surtsey eruption.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The house is open from 4:30 pm where visitors can get a signed copy before the programme begins at 5pm with short readings by the participants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Island Fiction<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> weaves together artworks by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thorgerdurolafsdottir.info\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00deorger\u00f0ur \u00d3lafsd\u00f3ttir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with varied texts and a travelogue that address the complex aspects of the existence, history, and meaning of Surtsey, the southernmost point of Iceland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In correlation with the artworks in the publication are new texts by four researchers; <\/span><b>Becky Forsythe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (curator, editor), <\/span><b>Birna L\u00e1rusd\u00f3ttir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (archeology, cultural landscapes and Icelandic studies), <\/span><b>Gu\u00f0bj\u00f6rg R. J\u00f3hannesd\u00f3ttir <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(environment philosophy, nature aesthetics), <\/span><b>\u00de\u00f3ra P\u00e9tursd\u00f3ttir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (contemporary archeology, environment humanities and heritage studies). In this multidisciplinary publication, readers get a glimpse into the many layers of Surtsey, from the perspectives of visual art and artistic research, ideas informing cultural and natural heritage in a changing world, contemplations on islands and islandness, the aesthetic experience of landscape, and asks: how can we connect to faraway places? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book is designed by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elinedda.info\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El\u00edn Edda \u00deorsteinsd\u00f3ttir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, graphic designer and illustrator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Island fiction is published in collaboration with the research project <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/relicsofnature.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relics of Nature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The publication is rich in content, 200 pages in length and in both Icelandic and English. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In connection to the publication and the 60th anniversary of Surtsey\u2019s eruption, \u00deorger\u00f0ur has installed a new work at Kambar, Hellishei\u00f0i, titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spor \/ Imprint,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 where you might receive a greeting from Surtsey in clear weather. The work is part of Sequences XI Art Festival and will remain throughout the month of November. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following organizations supported the production of the book: Environment Agency, Relics of Nature, Rann\u00eds starfslaunasj\u00f3\u00f0ur myndlistarmanna, Myndlistarsj\u00f3\u00f0ur and B\u00f3kmenntasj\u00f3\u00f0ur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Accessibility: Elissa auditorium has good accessibility for wheelchairs and accessible restroom is on the same floor. All restrooms are gender neutral.
