The Nordic House is proud to present the exhibition Century of the Child: Nordic Design for Children 1900 to Today. The exhibition appeals to visitors of all ages and The Nordic House offers various playful and interactive experiences in connection with the exhibition \u2013 both indoor and outdoor.<\/p>\n

About Century of the Child<\/h3>\n

Century of the Child gathers for the first time Nordic design for children from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Its title is borrowed from the groundbreaking book by Swedish visionary and social reformer, Ellen Key, who stated already in year 1900 that the 20th century should be declared the \u201ccentury of the child\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Nordic countries have been forerunners in design for children with Nordic designers, architects and artists contributing to the intellectual, emotional and physical development of children throughout the 20th century. The exhibition features chosen design of furniture, toys, books, clothing, school architecture, playgrounds and public spaces, posters and advertising, health-care and safety products, art projects and aids for children. In short, it covers broadly the material and social world of children.<\/p>\n

The exhibits include prime examples of Nordic design, some of which are rare collectors items. At the exhibition you will encounter iconic works by Alvar Aalto, \u00d3lafur El\u00edasson, Arne Jacobsen, Kay Bojesen, Carl og Karin Larsson, Peter Opsvik and Tove Jansson \u2013 and some of the world\u00b4s favorite brands like BRIO, LEGO and Marimekko.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A world for children at the Nordic House<\/h3>\n

On the occasion of the exhibition the Nordic House will open a new and renovated children\u00b4s library and an Icelandic addition to the exhibition, where items have been selected by the Nordic House in collaboration with Icelandic Design Museum and design historian, El\u00edsabet Ingvarsd\u00f3ttir.
\nIn May the Nordic House opened a climbing playground in front of the house from the FLOW series by Icelandic company Krumma. The FLOW rocks are designed and produced in Iceland.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is curated by Aidan O\u00b4Connor and Elna Svelne, and produced by Vandalorum in Sweden in collaboration with Designmuseum Danmark and Designmuseo Helsinki. The exhibition is rooted in Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900-2000, an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2012, organized by Juliet Kinchin, Curator, and Aidan O\u2019Connor, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, MoMA.
\nCentury of the Child has received great attention in Sweden, Denmark and Finland, where it has been exhibited over the past two years.<\/p>\n

Exhibition design at the Nordic House is carried out by Guja D\u00f6gg Hauksd\u00f3ttir architect.
