Why I love Ugly Manuscripts<\/h2>\n

Da jeg m\u00f8dte afdelingslederen for Princeton-universitetets h\u00e5ndskriftsamling og spurgte ham om der i samlingen fandtes nogle middelalderlige h\u00e5ndskrifter som indeholdt gammel litteratur, svarede han: \u201eKun nogle grimme.\u201c \u201eFantastisk,\u201c svarede jeg, \u201ejeg arbejder netop med den slags h\u00e5ndskrifter\u201c. I mit foredrag vil jeg uddybe hvad der menes med \u201egrimme h\u00e5ndskrifter\u201c og dr\u00f8fte hvad man kan l\u00e6re af dem. Der er ikke tale om smukt illustrerede pragth\u00e5ndskrifter skrevet p\u00e5 det fineste pergament for storm\u00e6nd eller pr\u00e6later, men brugsh\u00e5ndskrifter skrevet p\u00e5 pergamentrester eller papir, fremstillet for skoleelever og universitetsstuderende, d.v.s. dem som granskede teksterne, men ikke for dem der bladrede i dem for deres forn\u00f8jelses skyld. Foredraget bygger p\u00e5 min nylige forskning af h\u00e5ndskrifter som indeholder nogle klassiske tekster (\u00c6neiden af Vergil, Achilleid af Statius og Ilias latina), og desuden min tidligere forskning af h\u00e5ndskrifter med Poetria nova af Geoffrey af Vinsauf, en popul\u00e6r middelaldertekst. Jeg vil is\u00e6r fokusere p\u00e5 det som st\u00e5r skrevet mellem linjerne (og i marginen) og var beregnet til at v\u00e6kke studenternes fornemmelse for det som h\u00e6nder i teksten i lige s\u00e5 h\u00f8j grad som at hj\u00e6lpe dem til at tilegne sig den.<\/p>\n

Marjorie Curry Woods<\/strong> is Blumberg Professor of English, Professor of\u00a0Comparative Literature, and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the\u00a0University of Texas in Austin, where she has worked since 1991. She received\u00a0her B.A. in English from Stanford University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in\u00a0Mediaeval Studies from the University of Toronto. Her early research focused on\u00a0commentaries on an important medieval rhetorical treatise, the\u00a0Poetria\u00a0nova\u00a0of Geoffrey of Vinsauf, on which she published two books: an edition\u00a0and translation of two versions of\u00a0An Early Commentary on the\u00a0Poetria nova\u00a0of\u00a0Geoffrey of Vinsauf\u00a0and\u00a0Classroom Commentaries: Teaching\u00a0the\u00a0Poetria novaAcross Medieval and Renaissance Europe\u00a0(which\u00a0received the 2010 Book\u00a0Award from the Rhetoric Society of America). More\u00a0recently she has been studying the glosses and comments on medieval school\u00a0manuscripts of\u00a0classical texts for her next book,\u00a0Weeping for Dido:\u00a0Teaching the Classics in the Middle Ages, an expanded version of\u00a0her Gombrich Lectures given at the\u00a0Warburg Institute in 2014. She is\u00a0particularly interested in how medieval teachers emphasized emotional passages,\u00a0especially speeches in the voices of\u00a0female characters.
