Soap opera vs Literature: it’s method, not medium that counts

To mark the opening of the Iceland Writers Retreat scriptwriter Megan Herbert will be teaching an open-to-the-public masterclass at Nordic House in Reykjavík.

After years jumping between soap opera plotting rooms, journalistic and literary pursuits, children’s literature, and film production, Megan Herbert firmly believes there are no “soap opera stories” or “literature stories”. Regardless of the target audience, it’s always solid technique that helps a story reach its full potential. This workshop looks at successful tactics and common pitfalls, to elevate your storytelling across any genre or medium.

Megan Herbert has worked for almost two decades as a story liner, script writer, script editor, story producer, and development writer for television shows including long-running Australian drama Neighbours, and BBC dramas EastEnders and Holby City. While living in Iceland, she was Head of Development for Pegasus Pictures. Also a visual artist, she writes and illustrates children’s picture books.
